The next evening Mark and Maxim took Toren to a restaurant and a mall, then stopped for ice cream—Maxim’s favorite. After they dropped Maxim back at the den, Mark drove them to a nightclub.

“Why are we here, and why didn’t you bring Maxim along?” Toren asked as Mark opened the door to the building, which pounded with noise.

Toren entered, then wished he hadn’t. The place was packed with bodies, and his head began to throb immediately. It was so loud that he didn’t know how anyone could stand the place.

“I need to speak with the owner. She might have some idea of where Zeveride is.” Mark scanned the place. “And while I believe you could probably take care of yourself, Max can’t.”

“Why? What happened to him?” Toren had quickly grown to like the blond.

“Not my story to tell.” Mark indicated for Toren to take a seat at a table. “Wait here. I’ll be right back.”

A few minutes later, Toren followed Mark out of the club and breathed a huge sigh of relief as the door closed, shutting in the racket. “Did you find out anything?”

“I didn’t, sorry.”

Toren’s shoulders slumped. He was no closer to finding Zeveride than when he first arrived, and it was getting harder to hold off the panic. What if he never saw the wolf again? For all he knew, Zev could be across the country by now. Or dead. Toren shook his head, refusing to believe that.
